Dr. Mahadevan is the son of two Thiruvananthapuram doctors. His father, Dr. M. Ramachandran, retired as Associate Professor of General Medicine at Trivandrum Medical College, where he headed the ICMR cell. His mother, Dr. V. I. Nalini, was Professor and Head of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at SAT Hospital, the specialty Dr. Veena practises here.
